Marian Cramer Projects is pleased to present a new group of works on paper by the British painter Tim Ayres.
“THE GEILBELSTRASSE / VIA FONTANA MARTINA SERIES” is a series of diptychs in which he combines his text drawings with his photography. As his well known text works testify Ayres is clearly always listening to the world around him in his search for source material for his paintings; what becomes clear in this new suite is that he is also always looking at his world and gathering what he sees through the lens of his camera. The resulting works in “The Geibelstrasse / Via Fontana Martina Suite” are seductive, alluring, subtly erotic and, at times, touching on the melancholic. The diptychs embrace the poetic space between ‘heard’ (and ‘said’) and ‘seen’ (and ‘shown’) and as such are beguiling and deeply moving. Ayres has said himself that the suite is “about a ship that’s leaving in the distance” – what, or who, is onboard that ship, we wonder?
We look forward to welcoming you at Marian Cramer Projects to view the exhibition further.
Tim Ayres was born in Hastings, UK, in 1965 and gained a 1st Class Honours B.A.
at Loughborough College of Art (1988) and an MA at Chelsea School of Art (1989) before attending the Rijksakademie Voor Beeldende Kunsten (1989-‘91).
Ayres exhibits widely internationally. His work is also included in the collections of (among others) the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stadsgalerij Heerlen, the ABN Amro Collection and Akzo Nobel Foundation. He lives and works in Amsterdam.
